Observational studies are like being a fly on the wall. Researchers watch and record what happens naturally without disturbing or changing the environment. This type of study is great when you want to see what happens in real life. For example, if you want to know how people behave in a shopping mall, you just watch them go about their shopping without telling them what to do.

In observational studies:

• The environment remains natural and unchanged.
• This approach is often used in social sciences.

However, one limitation of observational studies is that they do not allow researchers to say one thing causes another since other unseen factors might be influencing the results. These are known as confounding variables. So, observing that people who eat more vegetables tend to be healthier doesn't necessarily mean vegetables cause good health. It just suggests a relationship.

Think of experimental studies as a science experiment from school. Here, researchers actively change something to see what happens. This is called manipulation. For instance, to test a new medicine's effectiveness, some participants get the real drug while others receive a placebo.

Key features of experimental studies include:

• Randomly assigning participants to different groups.
• Manipulating one or more independent variables to observe their effect on dependent variables.
• Controlling external variables to focus solely on the effect of the manipulated ones.

An experimental study helps in establishing cause-and-effect relationships. By controlling all other factors, researchers can confidently say whether a change in one variable directly causes a change in another. This is how new treatments and findings in science are tested and confirmed.

A cause-and-effect relationship is when one thing (the cause) directly leads to another thing happening (the effect). Think about pressing a light switch causing the light to turn on.

In the context of studies:

Sometimes, it is hard to establish cause and effect, especially in observational studies. For instance, seeing that students who study longer tend to get better grades doesn't automatically mean studying more causes the improvement. It could be that those students already had better study habits or other advantages that weren't part of the study.

To find genuine cause-and-effect relationships, experimental studies are often more reliable because they can isolate and test the influence of specific variables.
