The slope is a fundamental concept in understanding linear equations, especially for finding parallel lines. It tells us how steep a line is. Imagine walking uphill or downhill; the slope would describe how steep that hill is. Mathematically, it is the ratio of the change in the vertical direction (rise) to the change in the horizontal direction (run) between two points on a line. In the equation of a line, typically written as \(y = mx + b\), the slope is represented by \(m\). If you were to graph two lines, parallel lines would have the same slope.

• A zero slope means the line is horizontal.

By plugging these values into the point-slope formula, we can easily write the equation of that line. In our specific exercise, knowing that the line is parallel to another allows us to use the slope from that parallel line and plug it into the point-slope form with the given point \((g, h)\). This leads us to the equation: \(y - h = \frac{a}{b}(x - g)\).

Parallel lines are an essential concept when dealing with linear equations and geometry. Two lines are parallel if they have the same slope but different y-intercepts, which means they never meet regardless of how far they extend in both directions. Think of train tracks running side by side; they may go on for miles, but they never cross each other.
