Inequality graphing is a visual representation of the solutions to an inequality. It serves as a helpful tool to understand the range of values that satisfy the inequality. Take the inequality solved in our exercise, which resulted in the solution \( x < 3 \). Graphing this inequality involves a number line which covers all possible values x can take.

Compared to equations, where you might mark a single point to denote a solution, graphing inequalities usually involves shading a region. For \( x < 3 \), you would draw a number line, place an open circle at 3 to indicate that 3 is not included in the solution set, and then shade all the numbers to the left of 3. Why to the left? Because the value of x is less than 3, and on a number line, smaller numbers are to the left. This visual aid reinforces the concept that every point in the shaded area represents a possible value of x that satisfies the inequality.

Isolating the variable is a fundamental step in solving both equations and inequalities. It means rearranging the algebraic expression so that the variable we are solving for is on one side of the equation or inequality, and everything else is on the other side. In the inequality from our exercise, \(14 - 3x > 5\), we wanted to isolate x.

To do this, we performed operations that would leave x alone on one side. We first subtracted 14 from both sides, which cancelled the 14 on the left and moved it to the right. This left us with the simplified inequality \(-3x > -9\). The goal is to have a clear, unambiguous expression for the variable, making it straightforward to interpret the solution and graph it afterwards. When teaching this concept, emphasize the importance of performing the same operation on both sides of the inequality to maintain balance.

A negative coefficient presents a special situation when solving inequalities. In our example, once we isolated the variable, we had \(-3x > -9\). The negative coefficient of -3 indicates that the variable x was multiplied by -3. To solve for x, we need to do the opposite operation: divide by -3. However, dividing or multiplying both sides of an inequality by a negative number requires us to flip the inequality sign.

This is a critical step and can be a common mistake for students new to inequalities. In our exercise, dividing both sides by -3 changes the inequality from \( -3x > -9 \) to \( x < 3 \), reversing the direction of the inequality. This reflects the fact that when you multiply or divide an inequality by a negative, you are effectively flipping the entire number line. Making sure students grasp this concept is essential, as it is a key difference between solving inequalities versus solving equations.
