The Cartesian plane is essentially a flat, two-dimensional surface that represents the coordinate system visually. It is divided into four distinct areas, known as quadrants, by the x-axis and the y-axis. These quadrants are labeled counterclockwise:

• Quadrant I: Both x and y coordinates are positive.
• Quadrant II: x coordinates are negative, y coordinates are positive.
• Quadrant III: Both x and y coordinates are negative.
• Quadrant IV: x coordinates are positive, y coordinates are negative.

When plotting a point like (-18, -58), you move left on the x-axis and downward on the y-axis, placing the point squarely in Quadrant III. On a Cartesian plane, other points can be plotted, and their relative positions can be calculated using the coordinates.

Negative coordinates indicate direction in relation to the origin on the Cartesian plane. For the x coordinate, negative values mean moving left from the origin. For the y coordinate, negative values mean moving down from the origin.
Consider the point (-18, -58): it has two negative coordinates. This means starting at the origin and moving 18 units to the left along the x-axis and 58 units downward along the y-axis.
Understanding negative coordinates is crucial for determining point positions in Quadrants II and III, where either one or both values are negative. These coordinates help with graphing points accurately and understanding spatial relationships within the plane.
