In solving homogeneous linear differential equations with constant coefficients, understanding the auxiliary equation is paramount. The auxiliary equation is a polynomial obtained by replacing the derivatives in the differential equation with powers of a variable, often denoted as \( r \). This transformation simplifies the problem by transforming a differential equation into an algebraic equation, typically a polynomial, such as \[ ar^n + br^{n-1} + \, \ldots \,+ cr + d = 0. \]
For a 12th-order homogeneous linear differential equation, the auxiliary equation will have degree 12, which is equivalent to the order of the differential equation. Solving this polynomial provides the roots which are crucial for determining the nature of the solutions. These roots can be real or complex and have a direct influence on the form of the general solution of the differential equation.

Once you've solved the auxiliary equation, you'll find roots that may be real, complex, or repeated.Each type of root contributes differently to the solution of the differential equation:

• Real Roots:
  If the auxiliary equation yields real roots, say \( r = k \), then each distinct real root forms the basis of a solution of the form \( e^{kx} \). Repeated real roots necessitate additional linearly independent solutions of analog form, such as \( e^{kx}, xe^{kx}, x^2e^{kx}, \) etc., depending on the multiplicity of the root.


• Complex Roots:
  When complex roots arise, they typically appear in conjugate pairs. For a pair of complex roots \( a \pm bi \), you'll derive solutions incorporating both exponential and trigonometric components: \( e^{ax}\cos(bx) \) and \( e^{ax}\sin(bx) \). These functions capture the oscillatory behavior associated with complex numbers.

In the exercise example, the real root \( r = 2 \) occurs six times, requiring six respective solutions due to its multiplicity. Similarly, the complex root pairs \(3 \pm 4i \) result in solutions involving both sine and cosine functions.

The general solution of a differential equation is made up of all possible solutions derived from its roots. To derive this, you combine all distinct solutions corresponding to each root of the auxiliary equation.
The general solution for our specific differential equation example looks like this:
\[ y(x) = c_1e^{2x} + c_2xe^{2x} + c_3x^2e^{2x} + c_4x^3e^{2x} + c_5x^4e^{2x} + c_6x^5e^{2x} + c_7 \cos(4x)e^{3x} + c_8 \sin(4x)e^{3x}. \]
Here, each term corresponds to a linearly independent function associated with the real and complex roots found earlier. The constants \( c_1, c_2, \ldots, c_8 \) are arbitrary and determined by initial conditions or additional constraints when they are available.
This general solution expresses not just a single curve, but a family of functions that satisfy the original differential equation.
