An adjacency matrix is a powerful tool in graph theory, offering a simple and effective way to represent connections between vertices. In its basic form, it is a two-dimensional square matrix. Each row and column corresponds to a vertex in the graph. If there's an edge between vertex \(i\) and vertex \(j\), the cell \((i, j)\) in the matrix would typically have the value 1. If no such edge exists, the value would be 0. This binary approach works well for uncolored, undirected graphs.

The adjacency matrix neatly conveys the graph's structure in a compact way. Navigating complex graphs becomes more manageable by inspecting this matrix form. Remember that, for directed graphs, the matrix need not be symmetric because an edge from \(i\) to \(j\) does not imply an edge from \(j\) to \(i\).

Colored edges introduce an additional layer of information to a regular graph. Instead of just knowing if a connection exists, we also know the type or nature of this connection by its color. In our problem, edges can be red, blue, yellow, or green. To accommodate this, we extend the idea of an adjacency matrix.

Assigning numbers to each color, such as:

• Yellow = 3
• Green = 4

allows the adjacency matrix to maintain all the necessary information. Instead of binary values, the entries in the matrix capture not only the existence of an edge but its quality or attribute—its color. This means each cell \((i, j)\) will harbor a number representing the edge's color if it exists between vertex \(i\) and vertex \(j\), and 0 if no such edge exists.

Undirected graphs are straightforward in the sense that the edges have no direction. Whether you move from vertex \(i\) to vertex \(j\) or from \(j\) to \(i\), it's considered the same edge. This quality must be reflected in our matrix representation by ensuring symmetry.

In matrix terms, this means that if there is a colored edge from \(i\) to \(j\), the matrix cell \((i, j)\) should be equal to cell \((j, i)\). For example, if a red edge connects vertex 2 to vertex 5, both matrix entries \((2, 5)\) and \((5, 2)\) must display a 1. This symmetry is crucial in ensuring the integrity of the representation of undirected graphs.

Matrix representation, specifically through the adjacency matrix, offers a methodical and visual way to encapsulate graph information. This form of representation shines in scenarios where manual travel through a graph is impractical. The adjacency matrix reveals all connections and attributes at a glance.

Using a matrix for colored graphs enhances the detail we extract: we observe not only that an interaction exists but also its specific nature.
