Understanding decimal place value is essential when dealing with numbers that have digits to the right of the decimal point. A decimal number is a way of representing fractions in a base-10 system. Each position to the right of the decimal point represents a smaller unit, divided by powers of ten. For example, in the number 7.99, 7 is in the ones place, the first 9 is in the tenths place, and the second 9 is in the hundredths place.

Decimals can also have digits in the thousandths place, ten-thousandths place, and so on, each position being ten times smaller than the previous one. The concept of decimal place value allows us to understand the size of different numbers and to perform mathematical operations with them accurately.

To compare decimals, it is important to look at each decimal place starting from the left, or the highest value place. The numbers 7.99, 7.09, and 7.9 may seem close at a glance, but they differ when you consider their decimal places. All three numbers have a 7 in the ones place, which means we must compare the digits in the tenths place next. In our examples, we observe that the numbers 7.9 and 7.99 both have a 9 in the tenths place, whereas 7.09 has a 0, making it the smallest of the three. If numbers have the same digit in the tenths place, as is the case with 7.9 and 7.99, then we proceed to compare the hundredths place; the one with a higher digit in this place is the larger number. Remember that we assume a zero in a decimal place if no digit is written, so 7.9 is actually 7.90 when we compare hundredths.

Arranging numbers in increasing order involves comparing the numbers and then placing them in a sequence from smallest to largest. When the numbers are decimals, our comparison starts with the highest decimal place of value that is in the ones, and then we move right to the tenths, hundredths, and so on until a difference is found. In the numbers 7.99, 7.09, and 7.9, we initially compare the tenths place. This gives us 7.09 as the smallest. When comparing 7.9 and 7.99, with equal tenths place values, the hundredths place decides; thus, 7.9 (effectively 7.90) comes before 7.99. This method ensures accuracy in ordering decimal numbers. An additional tip is to align decimal points vertically when arranging a list of decimals to make it easier to see which ones are larger or smaller at a glance.
