Much space science research is concerned with what we would consider basic
science: finding out about the origin of the universe, exploring other
planets, studying how space phenomena affect Earth, and investigating the
potential for life elsewhere in the universe. Often, space program research
yields new discoveries with applications elsewhere. Each year, the federal
government spends approximately \(\$ 4\) billion ( \(0.15\) percent of the total
budget) on space science research. If you were in charge of the federal
budget, would you increase or decrease funding for space science or continue
to fund it at its current level? What are some aspects of this research on
which you would place greater emphasis?
