This texture forms in magma that cools slowly beneath the Earth's surface. The slower the cooling process, the more time crystals have to grow. Examples of rocks with phaneritic texture include granite and gabbro.
Identifying a phaneritic texture can inform geologists about the rock's history. Specifically, that it likely formed in a deep-seated environment, away from the rapid cooling influences of the surface.

The cooling rate of magma plays a critical role in determining the texture of the resulting igneous rock. There are two primary cooling environments: rapid and slow cooling.
Rapid Cooling: Magma that reaches the Earth's surface or is near the surface cools rapidly. This rapid cooling is characteristic of volcanic rocks that have fine-grained (aphanitic) textures.
