As tectonic plates move over these stationary hotspots, a sequence of volcanic activity can occur, resulting in chains of volcanoes that may form islands. The Hawaiian Islands are a prime example of this mechanism at work. Sitting atop the Pacific Plate, these islands have formed progressively as the plate moved northwest over a hotspot.
