Metamorphic rocks are rocks that have been transformed from an existing rock type, called a protolith, due to exposure to high heat, pressure, or fluid activity. The process of metamorphism does not involve the melting of rocks, which would form igneous rocks, but rather a solid-state change in the minerals and texture of the rock.

There are two main types of metamorphism to consider: 1. Regional Metamorphism: This occurs when rocks are subjected to high pressure and temperature over a large area, usually as a result of tectonic plate interactions and mountain-building processes. 2. Contact Metamorphism: This occurs when rocks are heated by direct contact with a hot magma body, usually along the edges of intruding igneous rocks.

Heat is a crucial factor in the formation of metamorphic rocks. As temperature increases, the minerals in the protolith can become unstable and start to transform into new minerals that are more thermodynamically stable at those higher temperatures. This process is called recrystallization.

Pressure plays a significant role in the formation of metamorphic rocks, specifically in regional metamorphism. When a rock is subjected to increased pressure, the minerals within it can change their shape, size, and arrangement, creating a new texture. This can lead to the development of foliation (layering) in metamorphic rocks.

Fluids, such as water or other volatile substances, play an essential part in the metamorphic process. They can transport elements between minerals and promote chemical reactions between them, leading to the formation of new minerals. Fluids can also increase the rate of mineral reactions by acting as catalysts.

The combination of minerals present in a metamorphic rock, called the mineral assemblage, is controlled by the temperature, pressure, and fluid conditions during metamorphism. The metamorphic grade refers to the intensity of metamorphism that a rock has experienced and is usually expressed in terms of the peak temperature and pressure conditions. Rocks with low-grade metamorphism may only have minor changes in their mineral assemblages and textures, while those with high-grade metamorphism can experience more dramatic transformations. By understanding these steps, students can grasp the processes that lead to the formation of metamorphic rocks, which are results of changes in temperature, pressure, and fluid activity.
