Understanding the fundamentals of stress in rocks is essential when considering geological formations and processes. Stress, in the geological context, refers to the force applied per unit area within rocks. It's the key factor that dictates whether a rock will bend, break, or remain unchanged. When rocks are subjected to forces exerted by tectonic activities, gravity, or human activities like mining, they respond differently based on the nature and amount of stress. While some rocks might deform, others may crack or shatter altogether, a behavior largely influenced by the inherent properties of the rock and its surrounding conditions.

Geologists classify stress into three primary types: compressive (squeezing), tensile (stretching), and shear (twisting or sliding). Each type of stress impacts rocks differently, leading to various structural changes like folds, joints, and faults. This understanding helps in predicting geological events such as earthquakes and landslides and in the exploration of natural resources.

When discussing elastic and plastic deformation in rocks, we are referring to how rocks respond to applied stresses. Elastic deformation occurs when a rock returns to its original shape after the stress is removed. It's much like stretching a rubber band and then releasing it to see it snap back to its initial form. This type of deformation is temporary and generally occurs at lower stress levels or within the rock's elasticity limit.

On the contrary, plastic deformation refers to permanent changes in the rock's shape that do not reverse after stress is released. It's akin to molding clay; once reshaped, it does not revert to its former configuration. This permanent deformation typically happens when stress exceeds the rock's elastic limit. In the crust, plastic deformation happens at higher temperatures and pressures, often deep within the Earth where rocks can flow slowly over time, much like a very viscous fluid.

The rock composition and properties are among the primary determinants of its behavior under stress. Various factors such as mineral content, grain structure, porosity, and even past stress history contribute to how a rock will respond. Rocks rich in quartz, for instance, tend to be harder and more resistant to deformation. Conversely, rocks with abundant softer minerals like clay can be more prone to plastic deformation due to their weaker structure.

Other properties, including porosity (the volume of void spaces) and permeability (the ability for fluid to flow through the rock), also affect deformation. Highly porous rocks may have less structural integrity, making them more susceptible to change under stress. Additionally, the rock's grain size and the bonds between the grains play a critical role; fine-grained rocks may have different strength characteristics compared to their coarse-grained counterparts.

The effects of temperature and pressure are equally paramount when assessing rock deformation. These factors are interrelated and have a significant influence on the rock strength and ductility. As depth increases within the Earth, both temperature and pressure typically rise, which contributes to rocks becoming more ductile and likely to deform plastically under stress.

At cooler temperatures, such as at or near the Earth's surface, rocks behave more brittlely and are liable to fracture when stressed. Pressure, also linked to depth, tends to stabilize the rock structure, allowing for more plastic deformation before fracturing occurs. Understanding this relationship helps in activities like deep earth drilling or when constructing foundations for large structures.
