When we think of the solid state of matter, everyday objects like ice come to mind. In this state, matter is composed of tightly packed particles arranged in a structured pattern.

The position of the particles within a solid is not random; they are arranged in a regular geometric lattice, contributing to the unique crystalline structure that we often see in ice. These particles do not have the freedom to move around; instead, they can only vibrate from their fixed position.

Because the particles are so close to each other and the movement is so restricted, solids have a definite shape and volume that do not change unless force is applied. Furthermore, the strength of the forces of attraction between the particles helps to keep the solid rigid and incompressible.

For students who find difficulty in visualizing this, imagining a crowd of people standing still and just shivering can give a practical image of how particles in a solid behave. The 'shivering' represents the vibrational movement of particles.

In the liquid state, matter behaves quite differently. If we take water as an example, unlike ice, it does not hold a specific shape and will conform to the shape of its container.

This phenomenon is due to the manner in which the particles in a liquid state are arranged. When matter is in the gas state, such as water vapor, it exhibits even more freedom than in the liquid state. Here, the particles are in constant motion, moving rapidly and randomly in all directions.

In the gas state, particles are spaced much farther apart compared to solids and liquids, which provides gases with the unique ability to expand indefinitely and fill their container. It's similar to a group of children playing in a large field, running all around without a specific pattern.

Because of this high degree of movement and the large spaces between particles, the forces of attraction have minimal effect in a gas, which is why gases are easily compressible and can diffuse quickly.
