In an ecosystem, organisms are grouped into categories based on their feeding position in the food web. These categories are known as trophic levels. The very foundation of the trophic structure is the producers, like plants and algae, which create their own food through photosynthesis. Above them are the primary consumers or herbivores that feed on producers. Further up are secondary consumers or carnivores that eat herbivores, and so on with tertiary consumers that may eat both primary and secondary consumers. The topmost level is occupied by apex predators, which have no natural predators.

Understanding trophic levels is essential because it helps us to analyze the flow of energy through an ecosystem. In each step up the trophic levels, energy is lost, explaining why there are fewer organisms at the top than at the bottom of the food chain. This hierarchy is directly represented in a biomass pyramid as the amounts of living or organic matter become less available the higher up you go.

The term 'ecosystem biomass' refers to the total mass of all living organisms—plants, animals, bacteria, and fungi—in a particular area or ecosystem. It's a measure of how much biological material exists at each moment, and it provides a snapshot of the potential energy available within the ecosystem. Biomass can be used to estimate the productivity of different ecosystems or compare them.

Within a biomass pyramid, the ecosystem's biomass is distributed unevenly across the different trophic levels. Generally, there is a greater biomass at the producer level than at the higher consumer levels. This is because energy is lost at each step due to factors like metabolic heat production and inefficiencies in energy transfer. Consequently, less energy is available to support biomass at each subsequent level.

Energy transfer in an ecosystem occurs when one organism consumes another. Through this process, energy stored in the biomass of one trophic level is passed on to the next. A key concept to grasp is the '10% rule,' which states that, on average, only about 10% of the energy from organic matter is converted into biomass at the next trophic level; the rest is lost to the environment as heat or used in metabolic processes.

This rule of energy transfer is fundamental to understanding why biomass pyramids generally show a decrease in biomass with ascending trophic levels. It also explains why ecosystems can only support a limited number of trophic levels. Producers convert sunlight into chemical energy with much greater efficiency than consumers convert the energy in the biomass they eat.

A food chain is a linear sequence of organisms through which nutrients and energy pass as one organism eats another within an ecosystem. Starting with producers at the base and moving up to primary, secondary, and tertiary consumers, food chains vividly demonstrate the direct links between organisms and their sources of energy.

Biomass pyramids and food chains are closely related concepts. Each level of the biomass pyramid is made up of organisms that belong to the same trophic level in numerous food chains. These pyramids illustrate not only the quantity of biomass at each level but also underscore the dependence of each trophic level on the one below it for energy. By analyzing food chains and biomass pyramids together, we can achieve a deeper understanding of the efficiency of energy transfer and the balance of ecosystems.
