The gravitational pull of the moon is the dominant factor in creating the tides that we observe on Earth. Imagine the moon as a magnet moving around Earth, pulling the ocean's water towards it. This pull results in a bulge in the ocean surface, which we experience as high tide.

At the same time, there's another high tide on the opposite side of Earth. This is because the Earth itself is also being pulled towards the moon, but the water on the far side is not pulled as strongly, creating a second bulge. These bulges correspond to the high tides, and the areas between them experience low tides. The gravitational effects are complex but strive for simplicity in explanation, thinking of the moon's gravity as an invisible hand that shapes the water on our planet.

While the moon plays the leading role in tides, the sun also has its part in this celestial dance. The sun's gravitational force acts upon the Earth as well, and when it aligns with the moon and the Earth, it can amplify the tidal effect.

During a full or new moon—when the sun, Earth, and moon are in a straight line—tides are especially strong, and these are called spring tides, not related to the season, but rather the concept of 'jumping' or 'leaping' to higher levels. Conversely, during the first and third quarters of the moon phase, the sun and moon are at right angles relative to Earth, resulting in lower high tides called neap tides. These variations are essential in understanding not just the regularity of tides, but the exceptional events that create unusually high or low tides on our coasts.

Finally, Earth's rotation is a continuous process that brings different geographical locations into and out of the tidal bulges created by the moon and sun. As Earth rotates over 24 hours, regions move through the two tidal bulges—a high tide when moving into a bulge and a low tide when moving away from it.

As a result, most coastal areas experience two high tides and two low tides each day. However, it's not a perfect cycle, as the positions of the moon and Earth change, making the timing of the tides not precisely symmetrical. This rotation also explains why the exact times of high and low tides shift from day to day.
