The 'Ring of Fire' refers to the horseshoe-shaped belt that encircles the Pacific Ocean, known for its high level of seismic activity including volcanoes and earthquakes. This ring marks the boundaries of several tectonic plates, including the Pacific Plate, which subducts beneath continental plates like the North American Plate.

As the oceanic plates dive into the Earth's mantle, they melt, and the resulting magma rises to the surface to form volcanic arcs and volcanic islands. Within the 'Ring of Fire' lies about 75% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes, making it a critical area of study for volcanic activity. Countries such as Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, and parts of the western coast of the Americas are all part of this volatile ring.

The mid-Atlantic Ridge is a massive underwater mountain range that stretches from the Arctic Ocean to the Southern Ocean. It's an area where two tectonic plates, specifically the Eurasian and North American plates to the north and the South American and African plates to the south, are moving apart from each other—a process known as divergence.

This movement allows magma from the mantle to rise through the thinning crust, cool, and solidify, causing volcanic activity and the creation of new ocean floor. The East African Rift is a significant rift valley stretching over thousands of kilometers from the Red Sea down through Eastern Africa. Unlike the mid-Atlantic Ridge, the East African Rift is located on continental crust and represents an area where the African Plate is gradually splitting into two smaller tectonic plates—the Nubian Plate to the west and the Somali Plate to the east.

This tectonic activity initiates volcanic processes as the crust thins and magma can ascend to create impressive volcanoes, such as Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya.
