One of the key differences between mammals and reptiles is how they manage their body temperature. Mammals are warm-blooded creatures, which means they can maintain a stable and consistent body temperature internally. This ability is crucial for their survival as it allows them to remain active in a variety of environments, whether hot or cold. They achieve this through metabolic processes and use of fur or hair for insulation. On the other hand, reptiles are cold-blooded. Their body temperature fluctuates with their surroundings. For warmth, they may bask in the sun, while to cool down, they might retreat into shade or water. This need to rely on environmental conditions influences their patterns of activity, habitat, and even physiological processes.

Mammals and reptiles also differ significantly in their reproductive methods. Most mammals give birth to live young, and a notable feature of mammals is the presence of mammary glands, which they use to feed their offspring with milk. This provides the young with essential nutrients and antibodies, ensuring they have a healthy start in life. However, there are exceptions like the monotremes (platypus and echidnas) that lay eggs. On the flip side, reptiles primarily lay eggs, though some species do give birth to live young. Reptilian young are typically more independent right from birth or hatching, requiring less parental care compared to mammalian offspring.

The skeletal and respiratory systems of mammals and reptiles underscore their evolutionary adaptations. Mammals possess a diaphragm, a significant muscular structure used in breathing. This, combined with a four-chambered heart, enables effective oxygenation of blood and efficient circulation throughout the body. Reptiles, however, have a different setup. Most reptiles lack a diaphragm, making their respiration less efficient. Their circulatory system is usually marked by a three-chambered heart, with the exception of crocodilians who have a four-chambered heart like mammals. Despite these differences, both groups have well-suited mechanisms that support their respective lifestyles.

Mammals and reptiles also exhibit interesting skin differences, which highlight their adaptability to the environment. Mammalian skin is often covered with hair or fur, providing not only a layer of warmth but also protecting internal organs against external elements and injuries. This is crucial for warm-blooded animals to maintain body heat. Reptiles, conversely, have scaly skin, which serves mainly as protection against physical damage and moisture loss. While not providing much insulation, these scales help prevent dehydration. Each type of skin reflects the living conditions and evolutionary lineage of these animal groups, showcasing nature's diverse adaptations.
