Isotopes are variants of a chemical element that have the same atomic number (number of protons) but different neutron numbers, resulting in a different atomic mass. Some isotopes are radioactive, meaning that they undergo a decay process over time, releasing energy in the form of radiation. Radioactive isotopes decay at a consistent rate, which allows us to use them as a "geological clock" to date rocks and other materials.

For dating rocks, we utilize the isotopes of strontium, specifically strontium-87 (\(^{87}\)Sr) and strontium-86 (\(^{86}\)Sr). Strontium-87 is a radiogenic isotope, which means it is produced through the decay of another radioactive element—in this case, the decay of rubidium-87 (\(^{87}\)Rb). Strontium-86 is a stable, non-radiogenic isotope and doesn't undergo decay. In strontium isotope dating, we use the ratio of strontium-87 to strontium-86, which is denoted as \(\frac{^ {87}Sr}{^ {86}Sr}\), to determine the age of the rock or mineral analyzed.

The process of radiometric dating using strontium isotopes involves the following steps: 1. Obtain a sample from the rock or mineral to be dated. 2. Measure the amount of rubidium-87 (\(^{87}\)Rb) and strontium-87 (\(^{87}\)Sr) present in the sample using a mass spectrometer. 3. Measure the ratio of strontium-87 to strontium-86 in the sample, also with a mass spectrometer. 4. Use the measured values of rubidium-87, strontium-87, and the strontium isotope ratio to calculate the age of the rock using the equation: \[t=\frac{1}{\lambda}\left(\frac{(^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr)_{measured} - (^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr)_{initial}}{^{87}Rb/^{86}Sr}+1\right)\] where \(t\) is the rock's age, \(\lambda\) is the decay constant of rubidium-87, and the subscripts \(measured\) and \(initial\) denote the measured and initial ratios of strontium-87 to strontium-86, respectively.

One main advantage of strontium isotope dating is that it can be used to date rocks and minerals that are millions to billions of years old, making it particularly useful for dating ancient rocks and geologic formations. However, strontium isotope dating has some limitations: 1. It is most effective for dating rocks and minerals that are rich in rubidium content, such as granites or metamorphic rocks, and is less effective for dating rocks with low rubidium content. 2. Strontium isotope dating relies on the assumption that the initial ratio of strontium-87 to strontium-86 in the rock is known or can be accurately estimated. 3. It can be affected by geological events, such as metamorphism or melting, that may alter the ratio of strontium isotopes in the rock. Despite these limitations, strontium isotope dating remains an important and useful tool for dating rocks and understanding Earth's history.
