Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are a group of chemicals that have raised global alarm due to their enduring presence in the environment and their capacity to cause adverse effects on both wildlife and humans. One example of biomagnification can be seen with DDT. This compound collects in the fatty tissues of plankton, which are then eaten by small fish. Larger fish then consume the smaller, leading to increasingly high concentrations of DDT in apex predators, such as eagles or humans.
