The ozone-oxygen cycle is a crucial natural process for maintaining the balance in our Earth's stratosphere. This cycle begins when ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun strikes a molecule of oxygen (\( O_2 \)). The intense energy splits the oxygen molecule into two separate oxygen atoms. This process is symbolized by the reaction: \[O_2 + ext{UV light} \rightarrow 2O\]Once these individual oxygen atoms are free, they are highly reactive and can quickly bond with unbroken oxygen molecules (\( O_2 \)) to form ozone (\( O_3 \)). This new formation can be represented as: \[O_2 + O \rightarrow O_3\]Interestingly, the ozone that is formed can be broken down again by absorbing UV light itself. This breakdown also involves the reconversion of ozone back into oxygen molecules and atoms: \[O_3 + ext{UV light} \rightarrow O_2 + O\]These ongoing reactions form a natural cycle that helps shield the Earth from harmful ultraviolet rays, by absorbing much of the UV radiation before it can reach the surface.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a type of energy emitted by the sun. It plays a key role in forming and maintaining the ozone layer. UV radiation is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, which includes visible light, radio waves, and X-rays.
Ultraviolet radiation is characterized by its short wavelength, which is beyond the visible spectrum we can see with our eyes. It is divided into three types:

• UV-A: Longest wavelength and least harmful.
• UV-B: Causes sunburn and can contribute to skin cancer.
• UV-C: Shortest wavelength and most harmful, but mostly absorbed by the ozone layer.

Although UV light is crucial in forming ozone, excessive exposure is harmful to living organisms, leading to issues such as skin cancer and cataracts. That’s why the ozone layer is vital; it acts as Earth's sunscreen, filtering out most of the sun’s dangerous UV radiation.

Ozone depletion refers to the thinning and reduction of the ozone layer in Earth's stratosphere. This phenomenon largely occurs due to chemical reactions with halogen atoms. These atoms can catalytically convert ozone (\( O_3 \)) back into oxygen (\( O_2 \)) and single oxygen atoms, reducing the overall amount of ozone.
Natural processes do have some role in ozone breakdown. However, human activities have significantly accelerated this depletion. The introduction of substances that contain chlorine and bromine into the atmosphere is a major factor, leading to the steady breakdown of ozone.
The most notable outcome of ozone depletion is the thinning ozone layer, a phenomenon often described as the "ozone hole." This problem is most pronounced in polar regions due to specific climatic conditions that facilitate these destructive chemical reactions.

Chlorofluorocarbons, commonly referred to as CFCs, are compounds consisting of chlorine, fluorine, and carbon. They were once widely used in products like air conditioning units, refrigerators, aerosol sprays, and as solvents. CFCs were favored for their stability and non-flammability.
Unfortunately, this stability is what allows CFCs to travel up to the stratosphere intact, where they encounter UV radiation. The radiation breaks them apart, releasing chlorine atoms. These chlorine atoms are extremely reactive and engage in catalytic reactions that break down ozone molecules into oxygen. A single chlorine atom can destroy thousands of ozone molecules before becoming deactivated.
As a result of their damaging impact on the ozone layer, international efforts such as the Montreal Protocol have phased out the production and use of many CFCs. These efforts aimed to reduce their concentration in the atmosphere and protect the ozone layer from further damage.
