In 2011, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster struck Japan following a massive earthquake and tsunami. This natural disaster severely impacted the plant’s ability to cool its nuclear reactors due to loss of power, leading to core meltdowns and the release of radioactive materials.
The key issues included:

• Natural disasters: The plant was hit by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake followed by a tsunami, which flooded the emergency diesel generators crucial for reactor cooling.
• Cooling system failure: The loss of power meant the cooling systems could not function, causing reactors to overheat.

The impact was extensive:
