The Flint Water Crisis serves as a widely recognized example of environmental injustice. This crisis began in 2014, when the city of Flint, Michigan, switched its water supply source from Lake Huron to the Flint River to cut costs. The river water, however, was not properly treated to prevent lead leaching from aging pipes. The result was a wide-scale lead contamination that exposed residents to potentially severe health risks.

Despite persistent complaints and evidence of water contamination, public officials provided assurances that the water was safe for nearly two years. This delay in action and the subsequent impact on the health of Flint's residents, many of whom were part of marginalized communities, highlighted systemic failures and a lack of accountability.

The distribution of environmental risks refers to how exposure to environmental hazards, such as contaminated water, air pollution, and industrial waste, affects different populations. Studies consistently show that these risks are not shared evenly across societies. Typically, economically disadvantaged and politically marginalized communities bear the brunt of these environmental hazards.

Risk distribution is influenced by factors like socioeconomic status, race, and political power. Lower-income neighborhoods, often with higher concentrations of minority residents, are commonly situated near polluting facilities or in areas with poorer infrastructure, leading to greater exposure to environmental risks.

Marginalized communities often face an unfair burden of environmental risks. Factors such as racial discrimination, economic inequality, and limited political clout intersect to make these communities more vulnerable.

For example, due to systemic inequities, these groups might live in areas with less stringent environmental regulations or inadequate investment in infrastructure. As a result, they have reduced access to mechanisms that could help mitigate exposure to pollutants. This can have long-term health, social, and economic impacts, perpetuating a cycle of disadvantage.

Lead contamination occurs when lead, a toxic metal, enters the environment and becomes a health hazard. It can adversely affect nearly every system in the human body and is particularly harmful to children, causing developmental delays and cognitive impairment.

Lead can be found in old paint, batteries, some toys, and may leach into water via corroded pipes, as it happened in Flint. Reducing lead exposure is a public health priority, particularly because the body accumulates lead over time, making even small amounts dangerous with prolonged exposure.
