The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is an international treaty with a comprehensive approach to sustainably managing Earth's biodiversity. The CBD came into effect in 1993 with three main goals:

• Conserving biological diversity.
• Ensuring the sustainable use of biodiversity components.
• Facilitating the fair sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources.

This broad scope distinguishes the CBD from other conservation agreements.
