The interaction between an acid and a base is known as an acid-base reaction, commonly resulting in the formation of water and a salt. On the flip side, the presence of hydroxide ions \(\mathrm{[OH^-]}\) points towards a substance’s basicity, highlighting the yin and yang of acid-base chemistry.

The pH scale is a perfect example of how logarithmic scales are employed in chemistry. This scale provides a concise and clear way to express the acidity or basicity of a solution. It’s important to note that because the pH scale is logarithmic, each unit change represents a tenfold change in hydrogen ion concentration. For instance, a solution with a pH of 3 is ten times more acidic than one with a pH of 4.

The logarithmic nature of the pH scale means it's not a linear scale where each increment equals an absolute unit of concentration. Instead, it's a way to manage the wide range of hydrogen ion concentrations that can be found in solutions, which could be as concentrated as 1 M in strong acids or as dilute as 1 part per billion in near-pure water.
