Imagine the Earth's crust as a giant jigsaw puzzle. The pieces of this puzzle are called tectonic plates. These plates float on the semi-fluid layer of the mantle. Where two or more of these pieces meet is known as plate boundaries. Plate boundaries are not just boring lines; they are bustling zones of activity. There are three main types of plate boundaries, each associated with specific geologic processes and events.

• Divergent boundaries: Here, plates pull apart from each other. As they separate, magma rises from below to fill the gap, forming new crust. This is why divergent boundaries are hot spots for volcanic activity.
• Convergent boundaries: At these boundaries, plates push towards each other, and one is often forced below the other into the mantle in a process called subduction. This action causes intense pressure and heat, resulting in both earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
• Transform boundaries: Here, plates slide past one another horizontally. The stress builds until it's released as energy in the form of earthquakes.

Volcanoes are like enormous safety valves for the Earth. They release magma from beneath the surface in spectacular eruptions. Each eruption is a result of the movement of tectonic plates and the build-up of pressure in the mantle below.

Volcanic activity is predominantly found at plate boundaries, making them the most common locations for such occurrences. At divergent boundaries, the separating plates allow magma from the mantle to rise, forming new crust as it cools. Earthquakes are the Earth's way of releasing built-up stress. When tectonic plates interact, they don't move smoothly. Friction can cause them to stick, storing enormous amounts of energy. Once the stress overcomes the friction, the energy is released as seismic waves, causing the ground to shake.

Most earthquakes happen along plate boundaries, with different types of boundaries producing unique patterns of seismic activity. At convergent boundaries, the collision and subduction of plates lead to powerful earthquakes as plates move suddenly. Transform boundaries are also hotspots for earthquakes. Here, as plates grind past each other, they periodically slip, leading to sudden shakes.
