Swamps are a type of wetland dominated by trees and shrubs. They typically occur in areas with slow-moving or still waters, often fed by groundwater and surface runoff from nearby water bodies like rivers or lakes. This slow-moving water creates an environment conducive to the growth of woody plants.

Marshes are another type of wetland, but unlike swamps, they lack woody vegetation. Instead, marshes are dominated by grasses, reeds, and other herbaceous plants. Marshes can be found in both freshwater and saltwater environments, and they are usually fed by surface water sources like rainfall or snowmelt.

Marsh characteristics include:

Bogs are unique wetlands, characterized by acidic waters and peat deposits, which are formed by the slow decomposition of sphagnum moss. Bogs receive water primarily through precipitation, making them isolated from groundwater or their surrounding landscape.

Bogs have distinct features:

• Acidic conditions with nutrient-poor waters
• Dominance of sphagnum moss, creating thick peat layers
• Specialized plant species like carnivorous plants that adapt to these challenging conditions

The unique ecosystem of bogs supports specialized wildlife, including rare species that thrive in its nutrient-poor environment. These ecosystems are important carbon sinks, storing carbon in the form of peat, which helps moderate climate change by trapping carbon dioxide.
