The concept of a linear data structure is represented by a sequence of elements where each item is connected to its previous and next neighbor in a linear fashion. Essentially, the elements are arranged in a specific order.

Doubly linked lists, the subject of the textbook exercise, are a perfect example of a linear data structure. In these lists, data elements called 'nodes' are linked sequentially where each node contains a data field and two pointers.

A pointer is essentially a variable that stores the memory address of another variable. Instead of holding the direct value, pointers 'point' to where the value is stored in the memory.

In the context of a doubly linked list, pointers are used to dynamically allocate memory for each new node and to connect each node with its neighbors through the 'previous' and 'next' links. The ability of pointers to reference both the data and the structure makes them highly useful for creating complex data structures where relationships between elements are as important as the elements themselves.
