For example, let’s take the Rectangle class in the provided exercise. This class defines two attributes: width and height. It also encapsulates a method named area that calculates the rectangle's area using the formula \( \text{area} = \text{width} \times \text{height} \). The class becomes a custom data type in C++, and we can create numerous instances (objects) based on this template with varying attribute values but sharing the same methods.

Object-oriented programming (OOP) is a programming paradigm that uses objects and classes to represent the structure and behavior of a program. It is based on several key principles: encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism.

Encapsulation allows for data and functions to be bundled together, prohibiting direct access to an object's data from outside the object's class definition, therefore ensuring the integrity of that data. Inheritance enables a new class to adopt the properties and methods of another class, facilitating reuse and the creation of a class hierarchy. Polymorphism allows objects to be treated as instances of their parent class rather than their actual class, enabling a single interface to represent different underlying forms (data types).

The Rectangle class from the exercise example is a perfect illustration of encapsulation, where the data (width and height) and the function to calculate the area are packaged within one unit—the Rectangle class.

An instance of a class, commonly referred to as an object, is a concrete occurrence of any object-oriented concept. When you create an instance of a class, you're allocating space in memory for storing the attributes and establishing a unique identity for that object. Each object has its own set of attribute values that define its state.

In our exercise, Rectangle rect1; declares 'rect1' as an instance of the Rectangle class. This line of code constructs an object and reserves memory for holding its width and height. By setting rect1.width = 5; and rect1.height = 3;, we assign specific values to the rect1 object's attributes, differentiating it from any other Rectangle object. When we invoke rect1.area();, we're using the object's method to perform an action, which in this case is to calculate its area.
