When molecules absorb energy, their atomic positions can change in a process known as a vibration. Each molecule, depending on its geometry and atomic composition, has a specific set of vibrational motions called ‘vibrational modes.' These modes often include stretching, where atoms move closer or further apart along the bond axis; and bending, where the angle between bonds changes.

Infrared (IR) spectroscopy is particularly sensitive to these vibrational transitions. When a molecule absorbs infrared radiation, it is often because the photon's energy matches the energy difference required to excite a molecule from one vibrational level to another.

The study of vibrational modes is crucial not only for understanding molecular structure but also for analyzing molecular fingerprints in IR and Raman spectroscopy. The number of vibrational modes depends on the molecule’s size; generally, a molecule with N atoms has 3N - 6 vibrational modes (or 3N - 5 if the molecule is linear).

Character tables serve as a powerful tool in group theory, summarizing key information about the symmetry elements of molecular point groups. These tables list the irreducible representations (IRs) of a point group and their corresponding symmetry properties with respect to rotations, reflections, and inversions.

For example, within these tables, one can find information about which vibrational modes are IR active (observable in infrared spectroscopy) and which are Raman active (observable in Raman spectroscopy). The character table also indicates whether a particular vibration is symmetric or antisymmetric, as well as its transformation properties.

Understanding how to read and utilize character tables is essential for predicting the vibrational behavior of molecules and interpreting spectral data. For instance, by consulting the character table, one can predict the number and type of peaks that would appear in an IR or Raman spectrum based on which vibrational modes are symmetry-allowed.

A point group is a group of symmetry operations that define the overall symmetry of a molecule. Molecules are classified into point groups based on their rotational axes, reflection planes, and centers of inversion. Each point group has a unique set of symmetry operations that determine the molecule's geometric structure and symmetry properties, which are directly related to its physical and chemical behavior.

The identification of a molecule’s point group is the first step in applying the principles of group theory to molecular spectroscopy. It allows us to predict molecular vibrations, optical activity, and other properties. For example, a molecule belonging to the linear point group D∞h will have different vibrational characteristics from a molecule in the trigonal planar D3h group, and these differences will be reflected in their spectroscopic signatures.

Raman spectroscopy is a technique that complements IR spectroscopy, providing insight into the vibrational states of molecules based on inelastic scattering of photons. It involves the interaction of light with the vibrational modes of a molecule which leads to a shift in energy, providing a unique 'fingerprint' for the substance.

Whereas IR spectroscopy depends on the change of the dipole moment during a vibration, Raman spectroscopy is sensitive to vibrations causing a change in polarizability of the molecule. This means that some vibrational modes that are inactive in IR due to symmetry could be active in Raman, making the combination of both techniques particularly powerful for the analysis of molecular vibrations.

It is important to understand that, like IR spectroscopy, the information from Raman active bands can be analyzed using group theory and character tables to determine the symmetry of the vibrational modes and the activity in the Raman spectrum.
