Graphite is an intriguing material composed of layers of carbon atoms arranged neatly in a two-dimensional structure. Imagine sheets of paper stacked on top of each other, where each sheet represents a layer in graphite. These layers are composed of carbon atoms bonded strongly together, forming a stable, flat arrangement. In graphite, each carbon atom is covalently bonded to three other carbon atoms, which gives rise to hexagonal patterns. This means each carbon atom is at the center of a hexagon, forming a honeycomb-like structure. These layers, known as planar arrays, can slide past each other easily, which is what gives graphite its characteristic slipperiness and usefulness as a lubricant.

Pi bonds play a crucial role in the properties of graphite. In a graphite layer, besides the strong sigma bonds that connect carbon atoms, there are additional pi bonds that are fascinating. These pi bonds arise from the overlap of unhybridized p-orbitals found above and below the plane of carbon atoms. Notably, these bonds do not exist between individual pairs of carbon atoms but are spread out across the entire layer. This forms a network of delocalized electrons that move freely throughout the plane. Because of this delocalization, pi bonds contribute significantly to the conductivity and overall stability of the graphite structure. With the electrons being delocalized, they provide a "field" that can carry electrical current efficiently within the layers.

Electrons in graphite have the freedom to move, particularly within the planes of carbon atoms, thanks to pi bonds. This freedom is what we refer to as electron mobility. Imagine the electrons surfing smoothly on wave-like channels, flowing effortlessly from one atom to another within a graphite layer. Such mobility is mainly due to the pi charge carriers being spread across the entire layer, instead of being localized to specific atoms. This quality significantly enhances graphite’s ability to conduct electricity. In more practical terms, when voltage is applied, these electrons shift in the direction of the electric field, allowing current to flow. The more free these electrons are to shift, the better the conductivity, which is why electron mobility is higher within the planes compared to the perpendicular directions.

The hexagonal lattice structure of graphite is fundamental to its properties. Visualize each graphite layer as a sheet with repeated hexagon patterns, which is exactly how the carbon atoms are arranged. The carbon atoms sit at the corners and the center of each hexagon. This configuration is crucial because it allows strong bonding within the layers while maintaining weaker forces between layers. These weaker van der Waals forces enable layers to slide over each other, contributing to graphite’s lubricating properties. Additionally, each hexagon contains a vast network of pi bonds, whose delocalized electrons boost the material's electrical conductivity. Because of its hexagonal lattice, graphite can conduct electricity effectively parallel to its layers.

Carbon atoms are at the heart of graphite’s unique properties. Each carbon atom, with its ability to form up to four covalent bonds, does something remarkable in graphite. It forms three sigma bonds with neighboring carbon atoms in the same plane. The fourth valence electron remains available to participate in pi bonding. This configuration results in a stable and strong arrangement due to the robustness of the covalent bonds. However, what makes carbon atoms particularly interesting in graphite is their role in electron delocalization. With the carbon atoms arranged in a nice grid-like array, they allow electrons to flow through pi bonds across the material easily. Such arrangement and bonding due to carbon’s versatile nature are why graphite exhibits its useful properties, like electrical conductivity and mechanical strength.
