The presence of an additional atom in CO2 provides more ways for energy to be stored and distributed, increasing the energy dispersion. This results in higher molar entropy for CO2 compared to CO. By understanding how energy moves and spreads in different molecular structures, we can predict which substances have higher molar entropy.

Molecular complexity directly influences the entropy of a system because more complex molecules have a higher capacity for storing and distributing energy. Complexity in this context refers to the number of atoms in a molecule and how they are arranged. More atoms typically mean more vibrational, rotational, and translational movements, enhancing the complexity.
Take propane (\( \ ext{CH}_3 ext{CH}_2 ext{CH}_3 \)) and cyclopropane (\( \ ext{C}_3 ext{H}_6 \)) as examples. Propane is a linear molecule, whereas cyclopropane has a ring structure. Linear structures like propane allow more freedom in movement compared to ring structures, which are constrained. This reduced freedom in cyclopropane’s ring-based structure decreases its molecular complexity relative to propane, resulting in the latter having a higher molar entropy. Thus, understanding the arrangement and bonding of atoms in a molecule is crucial for analyzing its entropy.

Degrees of freedom in a molecule refer to the various ways it can move, including translational (movement through space), rotational (spinning about its axis), and vibrational (movement of atoms within the molecule) modes. More degrees of freedom typically correlate to higher entropy because the molecule has more potential energy states to occupy.
Considering pentane \( \ ext{C}_5 ext{H}_{12} \) and 2,2-dimethylpropane (\( \ ext{C}_5 ext{H}_{12} \), also known as neopentane), we see this concept in action. Pentane is a straight-chain alkane that offers a vast array of rotational and vibrational movements, thereby having higher degrees of freedom. In contrast, 2,2-dimethylpropane has a compact, symmetrical structure with fewer configurations, limiting its degrees of freedom. As a result, pentane exhibits greater molar entropy due to its higher number of movement possibilities. Degrees of freedom thus play a crucial role in determining the entropy of a gas molecule.
