Subatomic particles are the tiny components that make up an atom. They are so small that billions of them could fit on the head of a pin. At the core of these particles are mainly three types:

• Protons
• Neutrons
• Electrons

Each of these particles has distinct characteristics. Protons are positively charged and contribute to the identity of an element. If you change the number of protons, you essentially change the element. Neutrons, on the other hand, carry no charge and serve as a buffer between the positively charged protons. This helps in holding the nucleus together. Electrons are much smaller than both protons and neutrons and carry a negative charge. Their mass is so small that it is often considered negligible compared to the rest of the atom.

The nucleus is the heart of the atom, housing both protons and neutrons. It's the dense, positively charged center that carries almost all the atomic mass. Protons and neutrons are tightly packed in the nucleus, despite the repulsion between the positively charged protons. This close packing is possible due to the strong nuclear force, which keeps them together. The presence of neutrons also plays a crucial role here. By residing between protons, they reduce the repulsion between protons, stabilizing the atom. Without this stability, the nucleus could break apart. In terms of visualization, the nucleus is like a tiny yet incredibly powerful bundle, hidden within the larger cloud of an atom.

Electron shells, or energy levels, are like rings or layers that surround the nucleus. They are regions within an atom where electrons can be found. These electrons, with their negative charge, balance the positive charge of the nucleus. Electrons have specific energy levels, determining their distance from the nucleus.
Electrons closer to the nucleus are at a lower energy level, while those further away have higher energy levels.
Energy levels are divided into different orbits or shells, and each shell can hold a specific number of electrons. This concept helps explain the chemical behavior of atoms. Atoms prefer full electron shells, which can lead them to gain, lose, or share electrons in chemical reactions.
