The ozone layer is a crucial shield in our atmosphere that absorbs the majority of the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Without it, life on Earth would be severely threatened by increased exposure to UV rays. Unfortunately, human activities have led to the depletion of this protective layer.
Freons, or chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), play a significant role in this depletion process. When these chemicals are released into the atmosphere, they eventually reach the stratosphere, where the ozone layer resides. Once there, strong UV radiation breaks down Freons, releasing chlorine atoms. These chlorine atoms react destructively with ozone molecules, splitting them apart.
Each chlorine atom has the ability to destroy multiple ozone molecules, creating a chain reaction that significantly damages the ozone layer. As a result, more UV radiation reaches Earth's surface, leading to increased risks such as skin cancer, cataracts, and harm to ecosystems.

Greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (\(CO_2\)), methane (\(CH_4\)), and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), are gases that trap heat in Earth's atmosphere. They create what is known as the greenhouse effect, which warms our planet's surface. While some greenhouse effect is necessary for life on Earth, an excess caused by human activities leads to global warming.
Freons are particularly potent greenhouse gases. They have a high capacity to trap heat, much more than carbon dioxide. This makes them a significant contributor to the rise in global temperatures. Although they exist in smaller quantities than \(CO_2\), their high global warming potential adds to the urgency of reducing and eliminating their use.
Limiting the use of Freons and other harmful substances is essential not just for protecting the ozone layer but also for minimizing their impact on climate change and stabilizing global temperatures.

The Montreal Protocol is an international treaty established in 1987 with the primary aim of protecting the ozone layer by phasing out the production and consumption of numerous substances responsible for ozone depletion. This groundbreaking agreement has been ratified by every country, making it one of the most successful environmental initiatives globally.
Under the Montreal Protocol, countries committed to controlling substances like Freons and gradually reducing their use. The treaty includes a timeline for reductions and even implements complete bans on some of the most harmful chemicals. It's designed with flexibility in mind, allowing for updates based on new scientific evidence.
The Protocol has proven highly effective, leading to a significant reduction in ozone-depleting substances. Thanks to these efforts, the ozone layer is showing signs of recovery, and continued commitment to this treaty will help restore it to its full strength in the coming decades.

Chlorofluorocarbons, often abbreviated as CFCs, are man-made chemical compounds that were once widely used in refrigeration, air conditioning, foam blowing agents, and aerosols. Their stability and non-flammability made them popular choices in various industries.
