In solids, such as ice, molecules are tightly packed and only vibrate in place, giving the solid a definite shape and volume. In liquids, the molecules are less tightly packed and can move around more freely, allowing liquids to take the shape of their container but maintaining a consistent volume. In gases, like water vapor, molecules move rapidly and are spaced far apart, so a gas will expand to fill the shape and volume of its container. Understanding these states is fundamental to grasping many scientific concepts, from elementary school science projects to advanced thermodynamics.
