The complexity of recreating the conditions needed for fusion on Earth means that it is not yet a viable large-scale energy source. However, the promise of clean and nearly unlimited power reserves propels ongoing research in this field. Unlike fission, fusion does not produce high-level radioactive waste, which contributes to its appeal as a sustainable energy source.

The cascade effect in chain reactions refers to the phenomenon where one event causes a series of subsequent events, similar to a line of falling dominoes. This effect is fundamental in both nuclear fission and fusion. In fission, each split nucleus can lead to further fission events, rapidly increasing the number of reactions. With fusion, the heat and energetic particles released from each fusion event can induce additional fusion in surrounding nuclei.

Understanding and controlling the cascade effect is crucial. In nuclear reactors, the effect is meticulously regulated to prevent an escalation into an uncontrollable scenario. Conversely, in a nuclear bomb, the cascade effect is designed to be swift and uncontrolled for maximum impact. Reaction propagation is the sustenance of a chain reaction over time and space. This continued activity is a hallmark of both nuclear fission and fusion. Despite being initiated by a single event, like the collision of a neutron with a uranium nucleus in fission, the propagation allows the reaction to continue as long as the necessary conditions and fuel are present.

In a controlled environment such as a nuclear reactor, propagation is managed so that each fission event produces, on average, one additional fission, maintaining a steady output of energy. The reactor's design, including mechanisms like control rods and coolant systems, prevents the reaction from growing out of control or diminishing.
