The porphyrin ring is an essential component of the chlorophyll molecule, forming a large, cyclic structure. It consists of four linked pyrrole rings. Each pyrrole is a smaller ring that includes four carbon atoms and one nitrogen atom. These pyrrole rings are connected by methine bridges, which are simply groups of one carbon atom bonded to hydrogen (CH groups). The porphyrin ring is the backbone that holds the rest of the chlorophyll structure together and is critical for its function in photosynthesis.

In the heart of the porphyrin ring is a magnesium ion ( Mg^{2+} ), which is vitally important for the function of chlorophyll. This magnesium ion is coordinated with the nitrogen atoms of the pyrrole rings and holds a crucial position at the center of the porphyrin ring structure. By acting as the central atom, magnesium enhances the ability of the porphyrin ring to absorb sunlight, which is necessary for the chlorophyll to perform photosynthesis. Without this ion, the chlorophyll molecule would not be able to effectively capture and utilize light energy, highlighting the integral role that magnesium plays in the chlorophyll molecule.

Alongside the porphyrin ring, chlorophyll features a long tail known as the phytol chain. This is a hydrocarbon chain, meaning it consists of a long sequence of carbon atoms bonded to hydrogen atoms. The phytol chain is hydrophobic, or water-insoluble, which is an important property that contributes to the lipid solubility of chlorophyll. This lipid solubility allows chlorophyll to embed itself within the thylakoid membranes located inside chloroplasts. Therefore, the phytol chain not only stabilizes the chlorophyll molecule within the cell's membranes but also ensures its proper orientation for capturing light effectively.

Though chlorophyll a and b share a similar base structure, subtle differences distinguish them. These differences are found specifically on the porphyrin ring. In chlorophyll a, the third carbon in the second pyrrole ring is linked to a methyl group (CH\(_3\)). In contrast, chlorophyll b features a formyl group (CHO) at this same position. While this might seem like a minor change, it affects how these types of chlorophyll absorb light, influencing the range of light wavelengths they can capture. Chlorophyll a generally absorbs light in the blue and red wavelengths, whereas chlorophyll b expands the light spectrum by absorbing additional blue light. This difference is vital for plants as it optimizes the efficiency of photosynthesis by capturing a broader range of sunlight.
