The lanthanides are known for their unique 4f orbital filling, which contributes significantly to their chemical properties. The 4f orbitals are relatively deep within the atom compared to the 5f orbitals of actinides, rendering the lanthanides less chemically reactive. As electrons fill the 4f orbitals, they shield each other from the nuclear charge very efficiently due to their shape and energy level. This phenomenon is known as 'lanthanide contraction' and it leads to only slight differences in ionic radii and similar chemical behavior among the lanthanides.

Specifically, this series of elements showcases similar reactivity and strength in their bonds because the additional electrons enter an inner orbital that does not participate much in chemical bonding. The filling starts with cerium (Ce), which has one electron in the 4f orbital, and ends with lutetium (Lu), which has a complete 4f shell of fourteen electrons. This progressive filling subtly influences properties such as ionic size, which can affect the solubility and separation processes important in lanthanide applications.

Actinides set themselves apart from most other elements due to their pronounced radioactivity. This arises from the instability of their nuclei, which contain relatively large numbers of protons and neutrons. The electron configuration of actinides involves the filling of the 5f orbital, which is less well shielded and extends further from the nucleus than the 4f orbital in lanthanides.

This greater distance from the nucleus allows these electrons to participate more in the chemical bonding, thus making actinides more chemically versatile—and also contributes to their instability. Actinium (Ac) through lawrencium (Lr) exhibit varying levels of radioactivity, with some like uranium (U) and plutonium (Pu) being critical for nuclear power and weapons. The radioactivity impacts not only their application but also the safe handling and storage protocols for these materials.

Oxidation states are a fundamental concept to understand the chemical behavior of both lanthanides and actinides. Oxidation state describes the charge of an ion and influences how an element participates in chemical reactions, particularly in the formation of compounds. For the lanthanides, the most common oxidation state is +3. This is due to the removal of their three outermost electrons which results in a relatively stable configuration.

Actinides, however, display a greater variety of oxidation states, including +3, +4, +5, and even +6 or +7 for some elements under specific conditions. The reason behind this diversity is the lesser degree of shielding by the 5f electrons and the ability of these electrons to participate in bonding. The variable oxidation states of actinides significantly influence their chemistry and play a role in their utilization in different industrial and scientific applications.
