The journey of tin from its natural ore form to a usable metal is fascinating. It begins with the mineral known as cassiterite, which is the primary source of tin. Cassiterite itself is not directly usable; it first needs to be extracted through a reduction process. This process involves crushing the cassiterite ore into smaller, manageable pieces and then heating it with carbon, typically in the form of charcoal. This heating takes place in a blast furnace or a similar environment. The goal is to strip away the oxygen from the tin oxide (the principal component of cassiterite) via a chemical reaction called smelting.

During smelting, the tin oxide within the ore reacts with the carbon from the charcoal to form tin and carbon dioxide:
