Tertiary structure refers to the complete three-dimensional shape formed by a single polypeptide chain. This level is marked by a variety of interactions that continue to fold and stabilize the structure.
These interactions include:

• Ionic interactions: Occur between oppositely charged side chains.
• Van der Waals forces: Weak attractions between closely packed molecules.
• Hydrophobic interactions: Non-polar side chains cluster away from the aqueous environment.

The tertiary structure determines the functional form of the protein and is often critical for its biological activity.

Not all proteins possess a quaternary structure, but those that do involve multiple polypeptide chains coming together to form a single, functional complex. These protein subunits can be identical or different and often function cooperatively.
Quaternary structures add an additional layer of stability and functionality to proteins. For instance, hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood, consists of four polypeptide subunits. The arrangement and interaction of these subunits enable the efficient capture and release of oxygen molecules.
Through the quaternary structure, proteins can perform complex functions not possible with a single polypeptide chain, expanding the protein's capabilities.
