Understanding standard reduction potentials is essential when studying electrolysis, particularly involving alkali metal halides such as those encountered in the evaporation of seawater. These standard reduction potentials, typically denoted by the symbol \(E^0\), measure a substance's affinity for electrons, or its eagerness to undergo reduction (gain of electrons). Values are assigned under standard conditions: a 1 M concentration, 1 atmosphere of pressure, and a temperature of 25°C (298 K).

In our exercise, we look at two specific half-reactions and their associated standard reduction potentials: chlorides (\(\mathrm{Cl}^-\)) reduced to chlorine gas (\(\mathrm{Cl}_2\)) and bromides (\(\mathrm{Br}^-\)) to bromine gas (\(\mathrm{Br}_2\)). For electrolysis, these values help determine which halogen will preferentially form at the anode; the halide with the higher (more positive) standard reduction potential will be reduced first. Remember, these are reduction potentials, so when we reverse the reaction for oxidation at the anode, the sign of the \(E^0\) value also reverses.

In electrolytic cells, oxidation at the anode is a fundamental concept. The anode is the electrode where oxidation (loss of electrons) occurs. During the electrolysis process, the positively charged anode attracts anions (negative ions) from the electrolyte. Once these anions reach the anode, they give up their electrons and undergo oxidation.

To conceptualize this, let's take the example provided in the exercise. Chlorine and bromine are produced through the oxidation of chloride (\(\mathrm{Cl}^-\)) and bromide (\(\mathrm{Br}^-\)) ions, respectively. The standard reduction potentials give us a hint at their oxidizing ability, but since oxidation is the reverse of reduction, we must consider the reverse potential. The less negative (or more positive) the oxidation potential, the easier the anion will be oxidized. This means that between \(\mathrm{Br}^-\) and \(\mathrm{Cl}^-\), \(\mathrm{Br}_2\) will form first at the anode when the cell potential is increased, simply because its oxidation potential is less negative, making it easier to oxidize.

The electrochemical series, also known as the activity series, is a list of elements organized by their standard electrode potentials. It's a very powerful tool in predicting the outcome of electrolytic processes and redox reactions.

In this series, the elements with higher reduction potentials are placed at the top, indicating a greater tendency to gain electrons and be reduced. Conversely, elements with lower reduction potentials are placed towards the bottom, hinting at their likelihood to lose electrons and be oxidized.

In the context of our exercise involving the electrolysis of alkali metal halides, the electrochemical series helped us deduce that bromine gas will form before chlorine gas. This is because bromide ions are higher in the series compared to chloride ions when considering reduction potentials. By understanding the electrochemical series, students can predict the products of electrolysis and understand the hierarchy of halide oxidation without having to memorize specific potential values.
