The stratosphere is a critical layer of Earth's atmosphere that extends from about 10 to 50 kilometers above the Earth's surface. One of its most significant features is that it houses the ozone layer. Unlike the troposphere, which is the layer where we live and weather forms, the stratosphere is more stable and has a unique temperature structure.

• The lower part of the stratosphere is cooler, but it gets warmer as you go higher.
• This inversion of temperature is due to the absorption of ultraviolet (UV) radiation by the ozone layer.

This absorption process is what keeps the stratosphere stable and allows the ozone layer to perform its essential role in protecting life on Earth.

Ultraviolet radiation is a type of energy emitted by the sun, lying just beyond the visible light spectrum. It comes in three types: UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C.

• UV-A is the least harmful and is not effectively blocked by the ozone layer.
• UV-B is more energetic and can cause skin burns and cancer, but much of it is absorbed by the ozone.
• UV-C is the most harmful but is completely absorbed by the ozone and oxygen in the atmosphere.

The ozone layer's ability to absorb UV-B and UV-C is what makes it vital for protecting living organisms from these high-energy rays. Without this absorption, the effects on health, crops, and ecosystems would be catastrophic, leading to increased incidence of diseases and detriment to food production.

Oxygen molecules, primarily in the form of \(O_2\), play a vital role in the formation and maintenance of the ozone layer. When UV radiation hits these molecules in the stratosphere, it causes them to split into two separate oxygen atoms.
This disintegration is a crucial step in the formation of ozone (O₃), as each free oxygen atom can then pair with an \(O_2\) molecule to create ozone:
1. \(O_2 + \text{UV light} \rightarrow 2O\)
2. \(O + O_2 \rightarrow O_3\)
Ultimately, the continued interaction of UV radiation with oxygen molecules ensures that the ozone layer is replenished naturally. This ongoing process is fundamental in maintaining the balance within the stratosphere and ensuring Earth's protection from harmful solar radiation.
