Function of Histamines

When released, they increase blood flow to affected tissues and enable other immune cells to reach the site of infection or injury by increasing the permeability of blood vessel walls. Therefore, histamines serve as 'red flags' that help rally the immune cells to a troubled area within the body.

The hypothalamus is a small but crucial part of the brain that has a significant role in maintaining homeostasis, which is the body's ability to maintain a stable internal environment. It regulates a wide array of bodily functions including temperature, hunger, thirst, sleep, mood, and libido.

One key function of the hypothalamus in the context of the immune response and inflammation is its role in fever regulation. When pyrogens activate the hypothalamus, it responds by increasing the body’s set temperature, leading to a fever.

While a fever is often seen as a bothersome symptom of illness, it is actually an adaptive response that helps the body fight off infections. The hypothalamus ensures that the body's temperature increases to a level that optimizes immune function without reaching harmful levels.

As mentioned earlier, histamines are key mediators in this process. They aid in expanding the capillaries, making it easier for immune cells to reach the site of injury or infection. Signs of inflammation are typically indicators that your body’s immune response is actively fighting to protect and repair your tissues.
