Combustion is a chemical reaction where a hydrocarbon burns in the presence of oxygen to produce carbon dioxide, water, and heat. It's a fundamental reaction that releases a substantial amount of energy, which makes it important for power generation and heating. For instance, methane (CH₄) combusts in the presence of oxygen as shown in the equation:
CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O.

Ethane, another example of a hydrocarbon, also undergoes combustion.For every 2 moles of ethane (C₂H₆), it combines with 7 moles of oxygen to produce 4 moles of carbon dioxide and 6 moles of water, releasing heat:
C₂H₆ + 7/2O₂ → 2CO₂ + 3H₂O.

It's pivotal to understand that the amount of oxygen available greatly affects the combustion process. If oxygen supply is limited, incomplete combustion may occur, potentially producing carbon monoxide (CO) or carbon (C) alongside water.

Halogenation is another important chemical reaction where a hydrocarbon reacts with halogens like chlorine or bromine, often under UV light, to form haloalkanes. Halogens are highly reactive, and when they come in contact with hydrocarbons, they tend to replace one or more hydrogen atoms.

Take methane's halogenation as an example:
CH₄ + Cl₂ → CH₃Cl + HCl.

Here, chlorine (Cl₂) reacts with methane to form chloromethane (CH₃Cl) and hydrogen chloride (HCl). In the case of ethane, a similar halogenation reaction would yield chloroethane:
C₂H₆ + Cl₂ → C₂H₅Cl + HCl.

Notice that these reactions are part of a larger group called substitution reactions, as the halogen 'substitutes' a hydrogen atom.

Oxidation reactions involve the loss of electrons, usually associated with a gain in oxygen or a loss of hydrogen. When hydrocarbons oxidize, they can form various products depending on the conditions and the presence of catalysts. Complete oxidation results in carbon dioxide and water, as seen in combustion.

For instance, in methane's oxidation with potassium permanganate (KMnO₄):
2CH₄ + 4KMnO₄ → 2CO₂ + 8H₂O + 4MnO₂ + 4KOH.

Ethane can also undergo oxidation to yield carbon dioxide, water, manganese dioxide, and potassium hydroxide with a similar reaction mechanism. It's essential to recognize that these oxidation reactions might be practical in industrial processes to produce chemicals, but they require careful control and specific conditions to proceed efficiently.

Hydrocarbons can be categorized based on their functional groups, which are specific groupings of atoms that confer characteristic properties and reactivities to those molecules. The primary hydrocarbon functional groups are alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and arenes.

Alkanes have single bonds (C-C) and include hydrocarbons like methane (CH₄) and ethane (C₂H₆). Alkenes have at least one double bond (C=C), and alkynes have at least one triple bond (C≡C), such as ethyne (C₂H₂). Arenes are aromatic hydrocarbons with alternating double and single bonds in a ring structure.

The type of bonds in these functional groups affect how hydrocarbons react. Alkanes are relatively inert compared to alkenes and alkynes, which have more reactive multiple bonds. Each functional group undergoes characteristic reactions, such as additional reactions for alkenes and alkynes, which alkanes do not typically participate in.
