Rhombic sulphur is the most stable allotrope of sulphur at room temperature. It crystallizes in an orthorhombic structure, which is akin to a lattice where atoms are neatly arranged in straight lines and angles, all perpendicular to each other. This type of sulphur is usually bright yellow and presents itself as brittle crystals. Rhombic sulphur is often found naturally and can be easily stored because it does not transform unless the temperature conditions change significantly.

Monoclinic sulphur is another fascinating allotrope of sulphur. Unlike its rhombic counterpart, monoclinic sulphur is less stable at room temperature and is typically found at higher temperatures. Its name comes from its monoclinic crystal structure, which, while similar to the orthorhombic pattern, has one angle that is not 90 degrees. This difference leads to a unique needle-like appearance and a distinct crystalline shape. Chemically, both rhombic and monoclinic sulphur behave similarly since they are made of the same element. They can form sulphur dioxide (SO2) when reacting with oxygen and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) when reacting with hydrogen. However, the crystal structure influences the reactivity. Monoclinic sulphur, because of its less stable structure, offers easier access to the reactive sites on its surface, thus making it slightly more reactive than rhombic sulphur.
