An effective way to imagine this is to think of a negative catalyst as a 'roadblock' that slows down the 'traffic flow' of reactant particles that are heading towards their product destinations. Despite this deceleration, negative catalysts, much like their positive counterparts, do not undergo permanent changes, preserving their initial properties at the end of the reaction.
