When we see colors in the objects around us, we're observing a fascinating interplay between light and matter. Objects don’t have inherent colors; rather, they interact with light in different ways, leading to our perception of color.

Consider a beam of white light, which is actually a mix of various wavelengths that correspond to different colors. When this light hits an object, two main things can happen: absorption and reflection. The atoms and molecules in the object absorb certain wavelengths of light and reflect others. The reflected light is what eventually enters our eyes, and this reflected spectrum determines the color we perceive for that object.

For instance, a ripe tomato appears red because it reflects red light and absorbs other wavelengths. If all wavelengths are absorbed, an object looks black, and if all wavelengths are reflected, it looks white. This play between absorption and reflection is a key foundation in understanding color in chemistry.

The reason we see colors is due to the complex workings of our eyes and brain. Deep within our eyes lie photoreceptors called cones, and these are sensitive to red, green, and blue light. When light reaches our eyes, these cones work in concert, sending signals to our brain that interpret the combination of light waves. This process lets us distinguish a vast palette of colors.

We might see an apple as red because that color is what predominantly reaches our eyes, but the apple reflects a mix of wavelengths. The red cones are stimulated more than the others, leading us to perceive the apple as red. The energy absorbed from light by chlorophyll is used to convert carbon dioxide and water into energy-rich glucose, a process vital for plant growth and, subsequently, for all life on earth.
