Without gypsum, cement would set almost immediately when mixed with water, which would make it challenging to handle or mold into structures.
Gypsum, or calcium sulfate dihydrate, reacts with the tricalcium aluminate present in clinker. This reaction hinders the premature setting of cement, providing the necessary time for workers to mix, transport, and place concrete properly. As a result, gypsum helps achieve the desired workability and strength upon setting.
The optimal amount of gypsum ensures effective hydration and increased durability of the cement.
