The extraction process of aluminium refers to the methods used to obtain this metal from its ores, particularly from bauxite. This process takes place in a large carbon-lined container called an electrolytic cell. The aluminium ions present in the electrolyte move towards the cathode, where they pick up three electrons and are reduced to aluminium atoms, which then sink to the bottom of the cell. Aluminium can also be used as a reducing agent in the thermite process, which involves a highly exothermic reaction between aluminium and a metal oxide, such as iron oxide (Fe2O3). The reaction produces molten aluminium oxide and the desired metal, in this case, iron. The thermite process is often used for welding large metal structures such as railway tracks. The reaction involved in the thermite process can be represented by the equation: 2Al + Fe2O3 -> 2Fe + Al2O3 In this reaction, aluminium acts as a reducing agent since it reduces iron oxide to its metal form. Moreover, aluminium itself is oxidized in the process, forming aluminium oxide as a byproduct.
