Understanding chemical bonds is crucial when it comes to deciphering the structure and properties of different substances. Chemical bonds are the forces that hold atoms together within a compound. There are two primary types of chemical bonds: ionic and covalent.

Ionic bonds occur when one atom donates an electron to another atom, resulting in positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions), which are attracted to each other. When it comes to ionic compounds, the smallest representative unit is called a formula unit. A formula unit represents the most reduced ratio of ions within the compound that retains the characteristics of the overall compound. Unlike molecules, which are the smallest unit of covalent compounds with a definite number of atoms, formula units do not imply a specific number of atoms but rather the proportion of ions.

For instance, \(NaCl\) consists of a 1:1 ratio of sodium ions to chlorine ions, and therefore, one formula unit of salt is represented by \(Na^+\) together with \(Cl^-\). Describing ionic compounds with formula units emphasizes the network structure of the compound, where each ion is surrounded by ions of opposite charge, rather than isolated groups of ions.

Distinguishing between ionic and covalent compounds is a fundamental aspect of chemistry because their differences have significant implications on their properties and behaviors. Ionic compounds, such as Sodium Chloride (\(NaCl\)), are typically formed between metals and nonmetals. They have high melting and boiling points, conduct electricity when dissolved in water, and form crystalline solids.

Covalent compounds are generally formed between nonmetal atoms. They share electron pairs and can exist as gases, liquids, or solids. These compounds have lower melting and boiling points compared to ionic compounds and often do not conduct electricity.
