Individual learning strategies can vary greatly among employees. Individual learning can make predicting expected production levels difficult. Individual learning should focus on increasing knowledge and skills to do a better job, whereas organizational learning should focus on solving challenges on behalf of the firm.

A firm's learning rate and industry disparity can be attributed to two factors. To begin, differences in operating characteristics between firms are unavoidable due to differences in machinery, methodologies, product innovation, plant organization, etc. Second, due process disparities emerge in expanding the learning percentage, such as whether the industry rate is based on a single product or a line of products.
